Grand Canyon finished 2-1 on its east coast trip, wrapping a third straight match against a team from the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with a 3-1 triumph over Sacred Heart at William H. Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn.
GCU is 2-2 overall and has won two straight, beating NJIT on Friday. The Antelopes travel to Cal State Northridge next Friday.
The Antelopes won Saturday’s match by set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21.
“It feels good to get back to .500,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “It’s been a tough early schedule with the first two against ranked teams and everything has been on the road. We have another stern test in front of us (next week).”
For the second straight day, the Antelopes had a balanced attack. They hit .250 as a team, but no individual reached double digits in kills.
Sophomore middle hitter Ryan Mather had team highs in both kills (nine) and block assists (7). Junior outside hitter Ben Ponnet had seven kills and eight digs. Freshman outside hitter Gerrard Lipscombe had seven kills, hitting .267 for the match, and three block assists. Junior outside hitter Ben Hunt had five kills on 12 swings (.333) to go with five digs and four block assists.
Eight different players had three kills or more. Six different players had three block assists or more and four players had at least five digs. Junior setter Keith Smith had seven digs to go with 40 assists. Senior libero Trent Bruns had six digs.
Frosh middle blocker Christian Ward, in two sets, had five block assists and four kills on only eight attempts.
GCU’s defense had 29 block assists, while Sacred Heart had two solos and eight assists. GCU held the Pioneers to a .109 hitting percentage.
The defense was the difference in the final two sets. The Antelopes held the Pioneers to -.057 hitting in the third and -.025 in the fourth. GCU had 10 blocks and 24 digs in the final two sets.
“We really stepped up our defense in the third and fourth set,” said Price.
