The Grand Canyon University women’s basketball program has announced the addition of Kaitlyn Petersen and Tori Hagni to the squad for 2012-13. Petersen, who previously played her freshman season at Gonzaga and her sophomore season at Cal-State Northridge, will sit out this year athletically and join the team for the following season. Hagni is a transfer from Missouri Baptist who will join the squad as a junior.
“We added another great piece to our program with Kaitlyn,” said head coach Trent May. “Her situation is a little unique because of her having to redshirt the upcoming season due to the NCAA double transfer rule. However, she will add a lot to the team this year with her competitiveness and talents.”
Last season at Cal-State Northridge, the 5’9” guard saw action in 16 games, making 11 starts, and averaged 24.8 minutes and 6.8 points per game.
During her freshman season at Gonzaga, Petersen helped guide the Bulldogs to the Sweet 16 after seeing action in 18 games.
“I know Kaitlyn will push her teammates every day in practice and will be able to give great insight to our guards,” May said. “She is a smart player who really understands the game. We look forward to her being another set of eyes in scouting and helping this year’s team to reach our potential. After this year, we know she will step right in to continue in our winning ways.”
Petersen was a four-year letterwinner at Mission Viejo High School, where she averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.0 steals during her senior campaign. She was a four-time All-South Coast Conference First Team honoree and was named the league’s Player of the Year after both her junior and senior seasons. She also garnered first team All-CIF and second team All-Orange County as a junior and season. ESPN’s HoopGurlz.com listed Petersen as the 38th best guard in the class of 2010.
Hagni spent two seasons at Missouri Baptist, where she saw action in 36 games. She played in 22 games last season and posted a 40.9 shooting percentage. During her freshman campaign, she played in 14 games and made one start while averaging 12.6 minutes per game.
“Tori is a welcomed addition to the program,” added May. “She has a great work ethic and tremendous attitude. She knows how to play and does so with the fundamentals it takes to be successful. Her hunger to succeed and willingness to compete just adds to the depth we have this year.”
Hagni attended Rolla High School and was a Class 5A First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-Conference selection. She also garnered All-Tournament Team Jeff City Unilever Tournament honors in 2007 and 2008, All-Tournament Rolla Invitational honors in 2008 and 2009 and was a 2009 All-Star Game selection.
The ‘Lopes will open the 2012-13 season with an exhibition game against the University of Denver in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 28 at noon.
