After their long trek to the Hawaiian Islands, the No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s volleyball returned home and played an impressive match in defeating Azusa Pacific, 3-1, today at Antelope Gymnasium in Phoenix, Ariz.
GCU won by set scores of 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 25-14.
The win improves the Antelopes to 14-2 overall, 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Azusa Pacific falls to 11-4, 3-3 in the league.
“It is an exciting time in the PacWest Conference with the addition of so many great new teams like Azusa Pacific,” said head coach Kris Naber. “Tonight our girls stuck to their scouting reports and made some nice adjustments during the match to secure this victory.”
Sophomore outside hitter
Hayleigh Friemoth led the ‘Lopes with 15 kills, including seven in the third set. Senior setter
Kristen Preach had 48 of Antelopes’ 56 assists and hit .500 with 7 kills on zero errors in 14 attempts.
Sophomore libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a team-high 20 digs, while Preach chipped in eight.
Junior middle blocker
Kristen Johannsen played tall at the net with a block solo and six block assists.
Lanie Muys added 9 kills on 14 attempts with only one error. She had three kills in the third and fourth sets.
The Antelopes hit .383 in the first set, .382 in the third and .304 in the fourth. GCU committed only 15 errors during the match, seven of which came in the second set, compared to 22 for the Cougars.
“The girls came into tonight’s game still a little jetlagged from our long trip,” added Naber. “I’m impressed at how they kept their focus on the task at hand. If tonight is any indication of what is ahead, then my expectations for this team just skyrocketed.”
Grand Canyon returns to the road where they will face California Baptist on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in Riverside, Calif. They will again square off against Azusa Pacific on Oct. 6 in Azusa, Calif.
