The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team defeated Holy Names, 5-2, today in Oakland, Calif. With the win, the Antelopes are now 2-3-2 overall and 1-0-2 in Pacific West Conference play. The Hawks, who joined the PacWest this year, fell to 1-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play.
The five goals marked the most for the ‘Lopes this season and the most since also scoring five on Oct. 1, 2011 at Hawai’i Hilo (5-2).
"I was happy that we finished the chances that we created up front," said head coach Stevie Gill. "With five different players getting on the scoreboard, it's nice to see everyone hitting the back of the net and coming away with a comfortable win after two back-to-back overtime ties. With 36 shots against their nine, it was evident that we controlled much of the game and played very well at the back. Angelina Miraglio, Brittany Gillespie and Martine Gjennestad were their usual dominant selves and played strong throughout the contest. Now I'm looking forward to our last game on this 10-day road trip in San Francisco and getting back to Phoenix to regroup and continue our unbeaten season."
The ‘Lopes had a substantive margin in shots and shots on goal, collecting 36 and 22 respectively, while the Hawks recorded nine shots, five of which were on goal. Holy Names goalkeeper Tiana Miyashiro had 17 saves in the game.
