The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team played Notre Dame de Namur to a 2-2 tie in double overtime tonight, their second consecutive 110 minute contest. The Antelopes are now 1-3-2 overall and 0-0-2 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Argonauts are 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
The ‘Lopes also played the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific to a scoreless double overtime tie in the conference opener on Saturday in Fresno, Calif.
“I am very proud of the girls for working hard in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “We need to finish our chances in order to compete with the top teams in the conference. We are creating some fantastic opportunities to score and not capitalizing on them.”
The ‘Lopes had the advantage in the shot column with a 19-16 margin, while the goalkeepers for both teams played the entire game and combined for 20 saves. GCU goalkeeper
Cat Lena had eight saves in the contest, four of which came in the second overtime.
“Cat Lena was outstanding tonight and really kept us in the game,” added Gill.
The Argonauts got on the board early, scoring the first goal in the 18
th minute. The game would remain 1-0 until Notre Dame de Namur cushioned their lead with another goal in the 70
th minute.
GCU was down two goals with just over four minutes remaining in the game, but were able to even the score with goals in the 85
th and 88
th minutes to force extra time on the clock.
Brittany Gillespie scored her first goal of the season with a header off a corner kick from
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas to pull within one goal. Just three minutes later,
Angelina Miraglio tied the game with another header from a well-executed corner kick by Zavala de Rojas.
Both teams took their share of shots during the overtime periods, but strong play at the net had the goalkeepers combine for seven saves in that time.
GCU will continue their Northern California road trip with a game at PacWest newcomer Holy Names on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
