The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team tied, 0-0, with Fresno Pacific in tonight’s conference opener for the Antelopes in Fresno, Calif. GCU’s record is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play, while the Sunbirds are 0-3-2 overall, 0-1-1 in the conference.
The two teams dueled to a scoreless tie after the first 90 minutes as the ‘Lopes played in their first overtime contest of the season. The next 20 minutes were tightly contested as seven shots were taken in overtime, four by GCU. It was the first double overtime scoreless tie for the ‘Lopes since Sept. 26, 2011 at BYU-Hawaii.
“I thought the girls played excellent,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “We created an enormous amount of chances. Their goalkeeper had a fantastic game and played tough throughout the competition. We need to finish our chances in order to win this thing.”

Gabriella Zavala de Rojas and
Samantha Bush each had two shots on goal. GCU goalkeeper
Cat Lena had four saves on the night.
The ‘Lopes had the advantage with six shots in the first half compared to two for the Sunbirds. Three of GCU’s first half shots were on goal.
The Sunbirds outshot the ‘Lopes for most of the second half before the ‘Lopes came on at the end with six shots over the final 13 minutes of regulation.
GCU’s defensive efforts did not allow a Sunbird shot in the first overtime period. The final 10 minutes of overtime saw the ‘Lopes take three shots in the first four minutes, two of which were on goal. Fresno Pacific responded with three shots of their own in a two-minute span.
GCU will next be in action when they face Notre Dame de Namur on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in their second of four games in Northern California.
