Grand Canyon University right-handed pitcher
Jorge Perez, who is playing summer baseball for the Corvallis Knights, was tabbed as the starter for the West in yesterday’s 2012 West Coast League All-Star Game at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla, Wash. Perez tossed a scoreless first inning and the West went on to win the game, 3-2.
The Knights are a member of the West Coast League for college-eligible players. Perez had previously made six starts for the Knights this summer, posting a 2-3 record and 2.80 ERA.
During his first season with the Antelopes in 2012, the freshman posted a 3-3 record and 2.48 ERA.
“Jorge is a great story, as he is a young man out of GCU who is up there competing with some great Division I players,” said GCU head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “Here he is pitching in the All-Star Game with the second-lowest ERA in the league. It is a great honor for him and it demonstrates all of the hard work he has put in over the spring with Coach Nathan Choate and has continued to do in the summer. It is also great for GCU baseball that our guys are going out and competing against big programs and competing well. We are tremendously proud of his summer and believe that there are big things in store for him for his sophomore season.”
