Grand Canyon delved into familiar territory and added two JUCO All-Americans to its roster for the 2012-13 season.
GCU wrestling coach R.C. LaHaye has announced the signing of junior college All-Americans Martin Gonzalez and Terrance Williams. Both are from Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon.
GCU has three current wrestlers from Clackamas on its roster, Justin Martin, Daniel Nelson and Brett Sanchez. The Antelopes also signed another Clackamas grad, Tyrell Fortune, a two-time JUCO national champion, during the early signing period.
“Coach Josh Rhoden at Clackamas does a great job with his athletes there, and we have gotten some great wrestlers out of Clackamas,” said LaHaye. “They won the national title two years ago and were fourth this past season. They are without a doubt one of the top Junior colleges in the country; we are excited to keep this pipeline from Portland to Phoenix going strong.”
Gonzalez is a 133-pounder from Gilroy, Calif. Along with being a two-time JUCO All-American; he has twice won California state championships and is a four-time California state placer. He was ranked No. 5 in the nation coming out of high school.
“Martin is one of only a few multiple time state champions and four-time state placers in California high school history,” said LaHaye. “He is extremely solid on his feet and his 2 NJCAA All-American titles prove he will be a force to reckon with here at GCU and on the national scene right away.”
Williams is a 174-pounder from Portland, Ore. Along with being a two-time NJCAA All-American, he is a two-time Region 18 NJCAA champion as well as a recipient of the Region 18 Outstanding Wrestler Award. He was also an Oregon state champion.
“Terrance is an extremely gifted athlete; we believe his potential is through the roof,” said LaHaye. “He was the top ranked wrestler in the nation his sophomore year at nationals when an injury ended his season. He will be a great asset to our upper middle weights and we believe he can be a title contender right out of the gates.”
GCU is coming off its most successful season in its five-year history. The team finished third at the NCAA Division II championships and two wrestlers, Victor Carazo (174) and Kyle McCrite (125) won national titles.
