Loss at Lewis Won't Keep 'Lopes From Hosting MIVA Quarterfinal

A difficult night at No. 9 Lewis (23-6, 9-3) didn’t mean a Saturday evening without reward.
Grand Canyon lost 3-0 to the Flyers at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill., but held on to fourth place in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and will host -- for the first time in program’s history -- a quarterfinal round game in the conference tournament.
The Antelopes (15-16, 5-7) tied for the fourth spot with IPFW, which lost to Loyola Chicago Saturday, and Ball State, but own the tiebreaker against both schools.
GCU will play Ball State Saturday in Phoenix.
The homecourt date took away some of the sting from a rough outing against Lewis, which tied for first in the MIVA, but will be the second-seed in the tournament. Ohio State is the top seed and will get a quarterfinal bye, as well as host the semifinals and championship.
GCU lost to the Flyers by set scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-16.
Sophomore outside hitter Ben Ponnet had a team-high nine kills on 18 attempts with no errors. He also had a team-high seven digs and a service ace. Robbie Brannick added six kills and a pair of block assists. Connor Dougherty had four kills and hit .500 (4-1-6) to go with three block assists.
Setter Keith Smith had 27 assists and a pair of blocks, including one solo. Libero Trent Bruns added six digs.
“They’re pretty good. There’s a reason they have their record and shared the conference title,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “They were really good tonight and we didn’t stop them.”
GCU hit .165 as a team to Lewis’s .415. The Antelopes hit .345 in their 25-20 second-set loss, but the Flyers hit. 500. In the second set, Brannick had four kills and hit .333 (4-1-9). Ponnet and Taylor Galliano each had three kills. Bruns and Ryan Olson each had three digs.
There were seven ties in the second set and GCU had a brief lead, 13-12, after a kill by Smith. The Antelopes latest tie was at 16. A kill by Ponnet on the first point of the third set was the only other lead of the night.
