Grand Canyon fell 3-0 to Loyola Chicago in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match Saturday at GCU Arena.
The Antelopes (14-11, 5-3) lost by set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 and were swept in the two-match series with the Ramblers (15-10, 6-3) over the weekend.
“They were really good (Saturday) and we were really bad,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “I was disappointed in our effort. No excuses. We were outplayed.”
Loyola hit .360 for the match to GCU’s .020 and had nine blocks to the Antelopes’ three.
Off the bench in the third set, freshman middle hitter Keaton Berry had three kills in four attempts. Freshman setter Jared Goldberg finished with 17 assists, five digs and a service ace.
“I thought Keaton Berry came in and did a good job and Jared Goldberg did a good job of getting him the ball,” said Price.
Ben Ponnet led in kills with eight and digs with seven. Taylor Griffin added five kills. Libero Trent Bruns had six digs. Taylor Gallianohad a solo block and one block assist.
“They had won three in a row (coming into this w eekend) and we’d won three of four, but it was pretty clear they were the better team this weekend,” added Price. “I thought we passed better than our attack numbers indicate. We had some bad swings and they had some good blocks.”
Playing mostly with subs in the third set, GCU got off to a good start, scoring the first three points and leading 4-1, before Loyola began coming back. It was tied 12-12 when the Ramblers took the lead for good.
GCU was trailing 11-10 when a Jake Wekell service ace tied it. Grand Canyon went up one on a Griffin kill.
The Antelopes had a 3-1 lead in the first set, getting kills to open the match from Jordon Tarantino and Ryan Olson, but, again, Loyola went on a run of six straight points to take a 7-3 advantage.
GCU finishes the home regular-season portion of its schedule with non-conference matches Friday and Saturday against Lindenwood at Antelope Gymnasium. Saturday is Senior Night and the Antelopes will honor four seniors, Galliano, Griffin, Andre Fajardo and Morgan Youngs.
