Grand Canyon will have its annual “Strike Out Cancer” Day at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium Saturday.
The softball team takes on Chaminade in a key Pacific West Conference doubleheader at noon. The team will be wearing pink jerseys and fans can buy “Strike Out Cancer” T-shirts for only $10. Proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Donations to the foundation can also be made at the gate.
“We want to raise awareness for breast cancer,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “It’s an honor for us to be a part of the fight against breast cancer and to make people more aware of the disease. This is a chance for our players and our program to honor the courageous women, men and their families affected by this disease.”
On the field, the games are crucial for the Antelopes, currently in third place in the PacWest, three games behind league-leader Hawai’i Pacific.
GCU (15-9, 6-2) has won each of its PacWest series, taking three of four games at Academy of Art and doing the same to start the current homestand against Hawai’i Hilo.
Chaminade (6-10, 5-5) comes in as a much-improved team and currently in fifth place.
“They’re a dangerous team,” said Pierson. “They’re scrappy, talented and good enough to beat anyone in the country on any given day.”
GCU has done its best work at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium. The Antelopes are 10-2 at home. Saturday’s doubleheader starts a key stretch of six conference games in four days. Grand Canyon welcomes first-place Hawai’i Pacific for noon doubleheaders Monday and Tuesday.
