Grand Canyon opens play in the Pacific West Conference with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Academy of Art in Brisbane, Calif.
GCU (7-6, 0-0) and Academy of Art (4-9, 0-0) start at 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday (Arizona time) at Mission Blue Field. For Sunday’s games only, fans can follow the action with live stats provided by the host school. A link to the live coverage is available at

In the preseason coaches’ poll, GCU was picked fourth in the conference. Art U was picked sixth.
“Academy of Art has a very good team and we’re going to have to play well to win,” said Grand Canyon coach Ann Pierson. “We need to continue to hit well, run well and put up some runs and hope to ride the momentum from our last games here.”
GCU won four straight in the GCU Invitational Feb. 18-19. The Antelopes outscored opponents 37-11 in four games, nine of the runs came in a 10-9 eight-inning win over Fort Lewis.
GCU is hitting .325 as a team, best in the Pacific West Conference and 23rd in the nation. Freshman right fielder
Kayla Henry leads the nation in triples (4) and ranks sixth in triples per game (.31).
Nationally, GCU is ranked in the Top 20 in seven categories. Henry is in a tie for first for toughest to strikeout. She has yet to fan in 44 at-bats and 54 plate appearances. Freshman pitcher
Kiley Raica is tied for 10th in saves (1).
Team-wise, the Antelopes are sixth in double plays turned per game (.62), 12th in triples per game (.38) and 19th in scoring (6.69).
GCU freshman
Kelsey Barak and Academy of Art’s Genna Allen are tied for the PacWest lead in home runs with four each. Art U’s Elyse Cordova is third in the league in hitting (.475) and the Urban Knight’s lead the conference in stolen bases with 26.
Canyon freshman
Lauren Regester is fifth in the league in hitting (.452) and sophomore second baseman
Claire Zampini, who along with Cordova and Art U’s Ashley Lokey, was a preseason all-conference choice, tops the PacWest in runs scored with 15.
The teams split last year’s four-game series in Phoenix and are 4-4 in the all-time series.
“We’re definitely ready to get the conference season going. We’re ready to play after a good week off. I like our energy and our focus has been strong,” added Pierson.
