GAME NOTES
VS. CAL BAPTIST: GCU leads the all-time series, 54-8. The Antelopes defeated the Lancers 65-55 on Feb. 11 in Riverside, Calif. The ‘Lopes trailed throughout the game and found themselves down 53-48 with 8:23 remaining in the game. Two Justin Wesolowski free throws with 8:06 left triggered a 17-2 GCU run to close out the game. Jerome Garrison led GCU with 17 points.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon picked up their seventh-straight win with an 82-50 win over Academy of Art in San Francisco on Feb. 25. Five Antelopes players scored in double figures and were led by Brayon Pickrel’s 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
POLLING PLACES: While it may be safe to assume the biggest vote of the week in Arizona came during the Republican Presidential Primary, a close second has to be the NCAA West Region men’s basketball poll. The Antelopes entered the poll for the first time this season, ranked 10
th. The top-eight teams in the region make it to the NCAA tourney. Selections for the tournament will be made on Sunday evening. Two wins by the Antelopes this weekend will make the selection show a “must-see” in your viewing plans Sunday evening.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is 13-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,194 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes are 4-6 on the road this season, having won their last four road games. GCU will finish the season by playing its final two games at home.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon has won their last four straight games on the road. It is the first time they have done so since winning six straight away from home in the 2006-07 season. The ‘Lopes had lost 10 in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season, prior to the current three-game win streak.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 72.2 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 73 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 35.4 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league.
“PICK” OF THE WEEK: Braylon Pickrel has been named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games contested Feb. 20-26. In wins over BYU-Hawai’i, Chaminade and Academy of Art, Pickrel averaged 17.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game. He ranked first in rebounding and in blocked shot average, and topped the league in free throw shooting for the week after going 13-for-13 from the line.
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 10.2 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in 13 games this season, including five in a row from Jan. 30 – Feb. 13. Garrison leads the conference with a .863 free throw percentage.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 18 of his 23 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in nine of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and Feb. 22 vs. Chaminade. His 13.5 points-per-game ranks 10th in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 77 assists and 33 steals.
“DUB” GETS BUSY ON THE BOARDS: Justin Wesolowski has pulled down 52 rebounds in his last seven games. He is sixth in the PacWest, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game.
