The Antelopes return four regulars from last year’s team that finished 22-25 and 14-14 in the Pacific West Conference. Among the returnees is 2011 PacWest Freshman of the Year,
Claire Zampini. The former Deer Valley High School standout was also a 2012 Preseason All-PacWest choice. The GCU starting second baseman hit .414 last season, best on the club and third in the PacWest.
Also back from last year are, four-year starting center fielder
Kara Holtorf, senior catcher
Christine Jordan (CJ) Norvell and sophomore third baseman
Stephanie Smith.
One-half of the 18 player roster will be new. Seven freshmen are among the newcomers.
“The overall culture of the team is very much improved,” said head coach Ann Pierson, in her ninth season and the only coach in the program’s history. “We have a very athletic team, a very fast team and we’re also very young.”
GCU was picked to finish fourth -- according to a conference coaches preseason poll released Thursday -- in the PacWest.
WNMU is GCU’s oldest rival. The Antelopes own a 27-15 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, GCU had a 3-1 advantage over the Mustangs. This will be the first-ever meetings between GCU and CSU East Bay.
It’s opening weekend for WNMU, also, but East Bay comes in 2-0 with a doubleheader sweep Wednesday of Academy of Art.
