The Grand Canyon University baseball team lost, 3-2, in their season opener against Colorado Mesa at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes outhit the Mavericks, 8-7, but left 16 runners on base and struck out 13 times.
“It’s hard to compete when you aren’t making them work defensively,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “We couldn’t put pressure on them because we weren’t putting the ball in play. We need to tighten it up. You want to think that maybe it is opening night jitters with guys trying to do too much.”
GCU starter
Brady Wager was tabbed with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work. Mavericks’ starter Nolan Snell picked up the win with 5.0 innings of one-run ball, while Derek Benham secured the save.
“I was encouraged by Brady, he really did a great job,” added Stankiewicz. “He ran into trouble in the second inning, when they scored three runs, but then he pitched out of tough jams and made pitches when he needed to. He grew up a little bit tonight.”
‘Lopes reliever
Coltin White tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while collecting three strikeouts.
“Coltin gave us a few shutout innings to keep us in the game,” said Stankiewicz. “Pitching staff did a wonderful job tonight.”
The Antelopes took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when leadoff hitter
Joey Bristyan, who reached on a walk and advanced to second on a balk, scored on a single off the bat of
Michael Pomeroy.
Pomeroy finished 4-for-5 with a double, while Trevor Santor had two hits.
“Michael had a great fall,” explained Stankiewicz. “He has done a good job and has been patient at the plate. He does what good hitters do and he hit good pitches. He is a good line drive hitter. He didn’t try to do too much. That’s who he is, so it was good to see him get off to a nice start tonight. Hopefully he can keep rolling this weekend.”
CMU scored each of their three runs in the top of the second inning after the first two batters reached base via singles. Colton Schoelkopf doubled in a run and Nate Robertson collected an RBI with a fielder’s choice to take the 2-1 lead. Schoelkopf came around to score on two wild pitches.
The ‘Lopes had the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, but were only able to score one run when Santor plated Aaron Mees with an RBI single in the sixth. GCU threatened again in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second and one out, but a strikeout followed by a fly out to center ended the game.
GCU return to action at Brazell Stadium tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
