The Grand Canyon University baseball team split their doubleheader against Colorado Mesa today at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. Following today’s games, GCU stands at 1-2, while CMU is 2-1.
“It was a tale of two stories today,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “In the first game, we pitched and played defense very well. And in game two unfortunately, I think our guys learned a valuable lesson. You have to play a whole game. We have costly throwing errors that let them back in the game. But this is a learning process and they are figuring out that baseball is a tricky game.”
GCU’s starting pitchers in today’s games,
Cody Repenning and
David Wydeven, combined to allow just 2 runs over 10.0 innings of work.
“Our starters have done a great job of getting us deep into the game and that is important in a four-game series,” added Stankiewicz. “When your starters are going five or six innings, then you have a little wiggle room in the bullpen. They both did a great job.”
The ‘Lopes won the first contest of the doubleheader, 4-2, behind Repenning’s 5.0 innings of two run ball and
P.J. Garcia's two home runs.
Mark Jarrett secured the save with 2.0 scoreless innings of work. The Mavericks’ Jared Christensen was charged with the loss after allowing 3 runs on six hits over 5.0 innings.
“Cody did a nice job and he pitched to contact,” Stankiewicz said. “The defense also did a nice job and we had a few nicely timed hits to win a close game. Mark did a great job out of the bullpen, going two innings to get the save.
The Mavericks scored a run in the top of the first inning after collecting three singles, but the ‘Lopes answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, both of which came via Garcia’s homer to right field.
CMU tied the game in the third, but GCU again took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Garcia hit his second homer, which also flew over the right field fence. The ‘Lopes then scored an insurance run in the sixth inning when
Tagg Duce, who singled with two outs, scored on Kyle Peterson’s double down the left field line.
“It was good to see P.J. hit those two home runs,” said Stankiewicz. “One of his biggest strengths is that he swings at strikes. He is a very disciplined hitter. It was good to see him break out a little and it was a shot in the arm that we needed.”
The Mavericks took the second game with an identical 4-2 score in nine innings after outslugging the ‘Lopes 10-8. GCU also had two errors in the contest. The game was scheduled for 7.0 innings, but CMU claimed the win with a 2-run ninth inning.
Coley Bruns, who entered the game in relief in the eighth inning, was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with a strikeout over 2.0 innings. Wydeven got the starting nod for the ‘Lopes and tossed 5.0 scoreless frames, allowing 6 hits and a walk with a strikeout.
“Coley and Sam did a great job,” added Stankiewicz. “They kept us in the game. Coley just got beat on a good pitch with that double down the line. They did a good job of putting the ball in play. We had a few scenarios with the bases loaded and didn’t put the ball in play.”
CMU reliever Tim Moore picked up the win with 3.0 scoreless frames. Tim Fowler broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning with a two-out, 2-run double.
Michael Pomeroy led the ‘Lopes at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance in the second game.
Ernesto Ortiz put GCU on the board with a sacrifice fly to score
Aaron Mees in the fourth inning.
Derek Mendoza added to lead after reaching base via walk, stealing second, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
The two teams meet for their final contest of the four-game series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon.
