Grand Canyon was unable to grab two of the final three deuce-games in a 3-1 loss to George Mason at Fairfax, Virginia Monday.
GCU (11-8) lost 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24.
"They had a lot more aces and a lot less (reception) errors," said GCU coach Jeremy Price, noting serving was one of the keys in the contest against the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe.
Grand Canyon led 11-8 and as late as 13-12 before losing the first set. In the second, GCU led most of the way, but the Patriots came back to take a 23-22 lead. The Antelopes scored the final three points on a service error, attack error and a solo block from junior setter
Brad Moore.
Grand Canyon never had the lead in the third set, but never trailed by more than three points. The fourth set was much the same.
"We had a ton of chances, especially in the fourth set," said Price. "It was a tough week, a tough trip."
Price commended the play of junior libero
Trent Bruns and junior middle hitter
Connor Dougherty.
Bruns had a match-best 12 digs. Dougherty had seven kills and two block assists.
Ben Ponnet had a team-best 12 kills and nine digs.
Ryan Mather had 10 kills and five total blocks.
Jake Wekell had 10 kills, nine digs, three block assists and a service ace.
Taylor Griffin added nine kills.
Moore had 26 assists.
Keith Smith added 19.
The Antelopes are off until a March 9-10 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association two-match set with Ball State at Antelope Gymnasium. At 2-0, GCU is at the top of the MIVA with Ohio State and Lewis, both are 3-1.
