Grand Canyon University, winners of six straight, will play Academy of Art this afternoon at the Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, Calif. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (Arizona time) and can be followed on www.GCULopes.com. GCU has three games remaining in their final push for a postseason berth. The Antelopes have won three straight on the road after dropping their previous 10 games away from home.
GAME NOTES
VS. ACADEMY OF ART: GCU leads the all-time series, 5-1. The Antelopes defeated the Urban Knights 75-59 on Feb. 13 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Braylon Pickrel had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks to lead GCU. AAU snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 74-71 win over Hawai’i Hilo on Thursday at the Kezar Pavilion.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon picked up its sixth consecutive win, knocking off Chaminade, 77-69 on Feb. 22 in Phoenix, Ariz. The game was played in from of 4,016 fans, a regular season high crowd for the ‘Lopes. Kyle Speed led the Antelopes with 20 points. Braylon Pickrel continued his hot streak, scoring 13 points with 10 rebounds. Justin Wesolowski scored 10 points and added nine rebounds.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is 13-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,194 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 3-6 on the road this season, having won their last three road games. GCU will finish the season by playing four of their remaining five games at home.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon has won their last three straight games on the road. It is the first time they have done so since winning six straight away from home in the 2006-07 season. The ‘Lopes had lost 10 in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season, prior to the current three-game win streak.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.8 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 73 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 35.1 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league.
DIALING IN FROM DOWNTOWN: Grand Canyon has shot 44 percent (45-for-103) from behind the arc in their past six games, all wins. The ‘Lopes are third in the conference, shooting 36 percent this season.
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 10.1 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in 12 games this season, including five in a row from Jan. 30 – Feb. 13. Garrison leads the conference with a .879 free throw percentage.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 17 of his 22 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in nine of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and Feb. 22 vs. Chaminade. His 13.5 points-per-game ranks eighth in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 71 assists and 32 steals.
“DUB” GETS BUSY ON THE BOARDS: Justin Wesolowski has pulled down 49 rebounds in his last six games. He is sixth in the PacWest, averaging 6.5 rebounds per game.
PICKREL GETS IT GOING: Braylon Pickrel has come on strong in the last three games for the Antelopes, scoring 55 points with 29 rebounds and 15 blocks. He leads all PacWest players with 51 blocks this season. Pickrel has amassed four double-doubles this season, two of which have come in this last three-game stretch. He has scored in double digits on 13 occasions this year, including five of his last six games.
20/20: Grand Canyon is 13-1 when leading at the half this season. They are 3-5 when trailing at the half and lost their only game in which they were tied after the first 20 minutes.
BALANCED ATTACK: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Six different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: GCU is in the homestretch of the 2011-12 season. The Antelopes will close out the regular season with a game against Cal Baptist on March 1 and Dixie State on March 3. Both games will be at GCU Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
