The No. 17 Grand Canyon University women's basketball team (20-3, 12-3) is set to face Academy of Art (15-9, 11-5) in their final regular season road contest tomorrow at 1 p.m. (Arizona time). VS. ACADEMY OF ART: GCU owns a 4-1 record against Academy of Art after falling in their first meeting this season, 72-69, on Feb. 13 in Phoenix.
WINDING DOWN: GCU will play two of their last three regular season games at home as today’s contest is the lone remaining road game. The ‘Lopes own 10-0 record on the road.
REGION RANKINGS: As of Feb. 19, the ‘Lopes are ranked third in the West Region behind UC San Diego and Alaska-Anchorage. PacWest foe Dixie State is ranked ninth in the poll.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU notched a new season-high in points as they defeated visiting Chaminade, 86-33, on Feb. 22. The 53-point victory was their largest since a 69-point win on Jan. 27, 2010 also over Chaminade. Joslynn Frazier recorded a career-high 20 points to lead five different players to reach double-digit scoring in the contest. The ‘Lopes shot 50.8 percent from the field.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 785-527 in the first half of their 23 regular season games and have scored at least 35 points in the first half 11 times. The ‘Lopes scored a season-high 51 first-half points on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points three times this season. The ‘Lopes have trailed at the half in only two of their games and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 10-0 on the road this season and have won 17 consecutive regular season road games (15 consecutive conference road games) dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.5 points-per-game away from home this season and since last season, are averaging 72.3 points-per-game on the road. GCU is averaging 65.2 points-per-game at home this season.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: first with 50.8 points-per-game-allowed, fourth with an 11.5 rebounding margin, fifth with a 32.7 defensive field goal percentage and tied for 12
th with an 85.7 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 91.6 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 73.4 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 74.0 percent, while their 42.2 field goal percentage and .330 three-point percentage also ranks second to Hawai’i Pacific (.426 and .348). GCU leads the conference with a 12.0 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks first in the conference with a 64.2 field goal percentage and second with 9.6 rebounds-per-game, while Maylinn Smith’s 15.9 points-per-game average is third.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 21 games this season, including a career-high 27 point performance at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1, a game in which she also recorded her first double-double of the season (11 rebounds).
BUTLER’S IMPACT: Jallisa Butler has set career-highs in both rebounds and points this season with 19 boards on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State and 21 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. She has been named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week twice: for Dec. 5-11 and Jan. 16-22.
JENNA FOR THREE!: Jenna Pearson drained six three-pointers en route to scoring a career-high 20 points on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i. Her six made shots behind the arc were one-shy of the school record, done on three occasions with the last coming on Feb. 5, 2009 at BYU-Hawai’i when Stacy Haddow accomplished the feat. She is 8-for-10 from the three-point line in her last two games.
FRAZIER, MS. CONSISTENCY: Senior forward Joslynn Frazier has found her groove, scoring a career-best 20 points in GCU’s 86-33 victory over Chaminade on Feb. 22. She has 80 points in the last eight games, averaging 10.0 points per game. Frazier has had double-digit points four times.
CINDY ON THE BLOCKS: Cindy Ekweozor collected four blocks on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i, one shy of the single-game record of five set by Jackie Stevens on Feb. 14, 2009 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. She now has a team-high 22 blocks this season, sixth-most in the PacWest.
ALOHA!: GCU went 7-1 against the Hawai’i teams this season and overall since joining the conference, are 51-5 against those teams.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 12-2 during the stretch. Since joining the conference in 2006, the ‘Lopes have posted a 78-13 mark overall and have won 15 games three times: in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and were as high as ninth on Nov. 29. GCU is currently 17
th in the poll.
