The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team (15-7, 9-5) enters the homestretch of the 2011-12 season with a critical game against Chaminade (9-12, 7-7) tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The Antelopes can move into a tie for third in the PacWest Conference with a win tonight as they make a final push for a postseason berth. The game can be followed live at www.GCULopes.com.
VS. CHAMINADE: GCU trails the all-time series, 10-13. The Antelopes fell to the Silverswords 69-66 in overtime on Jan. 30 in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Chaminade enters tonight having dropped thier last six games. They are led by first-year coach Eric Boivard. Boivard came to the Swords after serving as an assistant coach at West Liberty in Wheeling, West Virginia.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon won a critical PacWest matchup with BYU-Hawai’i 72-59 on Feb. 20 in GCU Arena. The Antelopes were led by Brayon Pickrel who finished with a career-best 23 points and eight blocked shots. He added eight rebounds. Blake Davis the ‘Lopes on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds. The Seasiders entered the game ranked No. 10 in the West Region poll. Only the top-eight in the region qualify for postseason play.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is 12-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,054 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 3-6 on the road this season, having won their last three road games. GCU will finish the season by playing four of their remaining five games at home.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon has won their last three straight games on the road. It is the first time they have done so since winning six straight away from home in the 2006-07 season. The ‘Lopes had lost 10 in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season, prior to the current three-game win streak.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.6 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 73 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 35.0 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league.
DIALING IN FROM DOWNTOWN: Grand Canyon has shot 41.4 percent (58-for-140) from behind the arc in their past seven games. The ‘Lopes are third in the conference, shooting 35 percent this season. Steve Morin has led the recent surge, making 14 three’s in his past five games (14-for-28).
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 10.2 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in 12 games this season, including in five of his last six. He is averaging 13.8 points per game in his last six contests. Garrison leads the conference with a .885 free throw percentage. He ranks tied for 17
th nationally and is second-best among fellow freshmen in D-II.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 16 of his 21 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in eight of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and his 13.2 points-per-game ranks ninth in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 68 assists and 30 steals.
“DUB” GETS BUSY ON THE BOARDS: Justin Wesolowski has pulled down 40 rebounds in his last five games. He is sixth in the PacWest, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game.
20/20: Grand Canyon is 12-1 when leading at the half this season. They are 2-5 when trailing at the half and lost their only game in which they were tied after the first 20 minutes.
BALANCED ATTACK: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Six different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: GCU is in the homestretch of the 2011-12 season. They have four games remaining with three coming at home. Chaminade visits GCU Arena tonight. Cal Baptist is the next team to be hosted by GCU on March 1 and are currently just ahead of the ‘Lopes in PacWest play with a 10-5 record. League-leader Dixie State was No. 4 in the first NCAA Regional Rankings and will be in Phoenix to play the Antelopes on March 3.
