The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team (14-7, 8-5) enters the homestretch of the 2011-12 season with a critical game against BYU-Hawai’i (14-8, 11-2) tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The Antelopes can move into a tie for third in the PacWest Conference with a win tonight as they make a final push for a postseason berth. BYU-Hawai’i was ranked No. 10 in the first West Region poll that was released last week. The top-eight squads advance to postseason play in the West Region. VS. BYU-HAWAI’I: GCU trails the all-time series, 6-12. The Antelopes fell to the Seasiders 79-75 on Jan. 28 in Laie, Hawai’i. The game was tightly contested with BYU shooting 56 percent from the floor. Kyle Speed scored 20 to lead GCU. The Seasiders are ranked No. 10 in the first released NCAA West Region poll. The top-eight schools qualify for the NCAA tourney. Jet Chang leads the Seasiders and PacWest Conference, averaging 18.6 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon used an 8-0 run in the game’s final 10 minutes to break open a close game to defeat Academy of Art 75-59 at GCU Arena on Feb. 13. Braylon Pickrel had 19 points and a season-best 11 boards and six blocked shots.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is 11-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,048 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 3-6 on the road this season, having won their last three road games. GCU will finish the season by playing four of their remaining five games at home.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon has won their last three straight games on the road. It is the first time they have done so since winning six straight away from home in the 2006-07 season. The ‘Lopes had lost 10 in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season, prior to the current three-game win streak.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.6 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 73 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 34.3 rebounds per game, sixth-best in the league.
DIALING IN FROM DOWNTOWN: Grand Canyon has shot 42 percent (52-for-124) from behind the arc in their past six games. The ‘Lopes are third in the conference, shooting 35 percent this season. Steve Morin has led the recent surge, making 13 three’s in his past four games (13-for-26).
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 10.5 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in 12 games this season, including his last five in a row. He is averaging 15.8 points per game in his last five contests. Garrison leads the conference with a .885 free throw percentage. He ranks 15
th nationally and is second-best among fellow freshmen in D-II.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 16 of his 20 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in eight of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and his 13.5 points-per-game ranks eighth in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 61 assists and 29 steals.
“DUB” GETS BUSY ON THE BOARDS: Justin Wesolowski has pulled down 31 rebounds in his last four games. He is seventh in the PacWest, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
20/20: Grand Canyon is 12-1 when leading at the half this season. They are 2-5 when trailing at the half and lost their only game in which they were tied after the first 20 minutes.
BALANCED ATTACK: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Six different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: GCU is in the homestretch of the 2011-12 season. They have five games remaining with four coming at home. Chaminade visits GCU Arena on Feb. 22. The ‘Lopes tonight face BYU-Hawai’i in a game that is critical towards their postseason chances. The Seasiders are ranked No. 10 in the first West Region poll. League-leader Dixie State was No. 4 in the first poll and will be in Phoenix to play the Antelopes on March 3.
