GAME NOTES
VS. CALIFORNIA BAPTIST: GCU leads the all-time series, 53-8. The Antelopes and Lancers are playing for the first time this season. Cal Baptist enters tonight’s game 1.5 games behind PacWest leader Dixie State. The Lancers are 6-1 at home this season. This will be the first meeting between GCU and CBU since Nov. 24, 2009, a 53-48 win in Russ Pennell’s first year with the Antelopes.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon shot 54 percent from the floor for the second-straight game to roll to an 84-71 win at Hawai’i Hilo. Jerome Garrison and Kyle Speed each had 17 points to lead the Antelopes. GCU shot 63 percent in the first half to open a 46-27 lead at the break. Canyon finished the game with 12 3-point baskets.
THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD: GCU is 10-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,087 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 2-6 on the road this season, having won their last two road games. Tonight will be GCU’s fifth-straight road contest.
MAKING THE MOST OF THEIR CHANCES: Grand Canyon has shot 54 percent from the floor in each of their past two games. They have shot over 50 percent in three games this season, winning all three. The Antelopes have shot 44 percent from the floor this season.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.7 points per game this season, fourth in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 72 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 34.8 rebounds per game, sixth-best in the league.
MORIN FINDS THE RANGE: Steve Morin hit five three-pointers in scoring a career-best 16 points against Chaminade on Jan. 30. He followed that performance up by hitting four three’s and scoring 12 points at HPU on Feb. 1. In his last game, Morin was 2-for-4 from the three-point line with 10 points. Morin, who averages 14.5 minutes per game, played a season-best 23 minutes in the games at Chaminade and HPU. It was the most minutes he has logged in a game since playing 23 minutes on Dec. 30, 2010 against Southwestern.
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 9.9 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in 10 games this season, including seven of the last nine. He is averaging 15.7 points per game in his last three contests. Garrison leads the conference with a .878 free throw percentage. The mark ranks 28
th overall in D-II nationally and is the fourth-highest percentage by a freshmen.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 15 of his 18 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in eight of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and his 13.8 points-per-game ranks ninth in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 50 assists and 28 steals.
20/20: Grand Canyon is 11-1 when leading at the half this season. They are 1-5 when trailing at the half and lost their only game in which they were tied after the first 20 minutes.
BALANCED ATTACK: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Six Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Six different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
