GCU Grabs Pair of 3-0 Wins at Arena Friday

Grand Canyon earned a pair of 3-0 wins over King College and Johnson and Wales Friday at GCU Arena.
The Antelopes (7-5) won its afternoon match over King by set scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-14. They defeated Johnson and Wales 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 Friday evening.
“We got a chance to see a lot of people play and play different positions,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “We played all of our healthy people and everyone did something productive.”
Against King (5-5), Grand Canyon scored the first seven points of the match, six coming on the serving of Robbie Brannick. Taylor Griffin, Ben Ponnet and Brannick each had three first-set kills. GCU hit .476, while King hit only .040 in the opening set.
Christopher Lockwood had six second-set kills and Ponnet added four more to get GCU out to a 2-0 lead. GCU hit .429 for the set. King hit .111.
The third set was much the same, GCU hit .438. Lockwood added four more kills with no errors and finished with a match-high 12 kills and an .800 hitting percentage (12-0-15). Griffin had eight kills and a .438 average. Ponnet added seven and Brannick had six.
Setter Keith Smith had 33 assists on 42 kills. Ryan Mather had a team-high two service aces. Griffin and Lockwood each had two block assists. Griffin had a match-high six digs.
Against Johnson and Wales (0-6), GCU hit .382 in its first-set win. Ponnet had eight kills on 11 attempts for a .727 average. Taylor Galliano added three kills. Junior setter Brad Moore, in his first action of the season, had 12 first-set assists. The Wildcats hit .097.
In the second set, sophomore middle hitter Connor Dougherty had four kills on five tries and combined with Ponnet for a block.
Galliano, Ponnet, Ben Hunt and Keaton Berry each had two kills in the set. GCU hit .321 and was 85 percent on sideouts. JWU hit just .069. The second set ended on a service ace from Andre Fajardo.
Grand Canyon’s third set was much like the first two. It hit .371, while Galliano, Hunt and Berry each had four kills. Galliano had a team-high 11 digs. Moore finished with 32 assists. Ponnet led all players with 12 kills. He and Galliano both hit .400 for the match. Dougherty hit .462. Galliano also added three service aces to go with his nine kills.
Back-up libero Jared Morrison had a solid match with six digs in two sets to go with four assists.
“Coming off our bye week, we wanted to be more efficient offensively and we achieved that today,” Price added.
