The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team (10-7, 4-5) will look to snap their 10-game road losing streak when they face Hawai’i Pacific (7-10, 2-7) tonight at 10:00 p.m. (Arizona Time) at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i. GAME NOTES
VS. HAWAI’I PACIFIC: GCU leads the all-time series, 12-5. The Antelopes and Sea Warriors will play for the second time in eight days, as GCU defeated HPU 70-57 on Jan. 24 at Grand Canyon University Arena. HPU has lost six of their last seven games, with three of those losses coming by three points or less. The Sea Warriors defeated the Antelopes 74-70 in Honolulu last season. This will be the first time the two teams have met at the Neal Blaisdell Center under Russ Pennell.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon dropped a 69-66 overtime contest to Chaminade on Jan. 30. The Antelopes were led by Steve Morin’s 16 points on five treys. GCU shot a season-low 35 percent compared to 43 percent for the Silverswords. Canyon committed only 12 turnovers to 19 for Chaminade. The ‘Lopes were beaten on the boards, 44-30.
THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD: GCU is 10-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,087 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 0-6 on the road this season, having dropped their last 10 in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season. GCU is averaging 74.2 points per game at home, compared to 65.0 on the road.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 70.9 points per game this season, fourth in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 72 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 34.8 rebounds per game, sixth-best in the league.
MORIN FINDS THE MARK: Steve Morin hit five three-pointers in scoring a career-best 16 points against Chaminade on Jan. 30. He had made four treys in a game on five occasions previously. Morin, who averages 13.8 minutes per game, played a season-best 23 minutes during the game. It was the most minutes he has logged in a game since playing 23 minutes on Dec. 30, 2010 against Southwestern (now Arizona Christian).
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Jerome Garrison has had an impactful frosh season for GCU. He is averaging 9.0 points per game, the second highest among freshmen in the PacWest Conference. Garrison has scored in double digits in eight games this season, including five of the last seven. He leads the conference with a .893 free throw percentage. The mark ranks 20
th in D-II nationally.
POINT LEADERSHIP: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 13 of his 16 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in seven of those games. He scored a season-high 20 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i and his 13.8 points-per-game ranks eighth in the PacWest. Speed leads the team with 42 assists and 27 steals.
BARRET CHIPS IN: Barret Robbins, who has averaged 13.6 minutes per game this season, has played 58 minutes in his last three contests, an average of 19.3 minutes. Robbins was GCU’s leading rebounder in two of their last three games, pulling down a career-best eight boards on Jan. 24 vs. Hawai’i Hilo and six on Saturday at BYU-Hawai’i. He had four on Jan. 30 at Chaminade.
20/20: Grand Canyon is 9-1 when leading at the half this season. They are 1-5 when trailing at the half and lost their only game in which they were tied after the first 20 minutes.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Six different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: Following the game tonight the Antelopes will travel to the Big Island for a game on Feb. 4 with Hawai’i Hilo. The Antelopes dropped all four games last season when they made the trek to the islands. Grand Canyon will return to the mainland on Feb. 5 and will next be in action on Feb. 11 at new PacWest member Cal Baptist.
