The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team defeated Hawai’i Hilo, 74-68, tonight at GCU Arena for their seventh straight win and first of Pacific West Conference play. The Antelopes are now 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Vulcans fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The ‘Lopes shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) for the game, while the Vulcans posted a 24-for-54 mark (44.4 percent). GCU held an advantage on the board, with 40 rebounds compared to 33 for Hilo, which resulted in 19 second chance points and eight fast break points.
GCU was led by
Jerome Garrison with 15 points, while
Joshua Lowery and
Justin Foreman had 12 points and
Braylon Pickrel added 10.
GCU shot 45.5 percent (15-for-33) in the first half, led by Foreman with 11. The Vulcans posted a 41.7 field goal percentage (10-for-24) and drained 10 of their 12 free throw attempts (83.3 percent).
The ‘Lopes used 22 points in the paint and 10 second chance points to withhold a number of Hilo rallies in the first half.
The ‘Lopes led by as many as eight points in the first half when they held a 9-1 advantage with 16:25 to play. The Vulcans slowly chipped away at GCU’s lead, although they were never able to knot the score as the ‘Lopes carried a 37-30 lead into the locker room.
GCU opened the second half with a 10-2 run to build a game-high 15 point lead (47-32) over the Vulcans. Hilo responded with an 11-0 run of their own to pull within four points at 47-43 with just under 11 minutes to play. The Vulcans made it a two-point game on a number of occasions before pulling within one point at 58-57 and 60-59.
That is the closest the Vulcans would come as GCU outscored Hilo 14-9 for the remainder of the game to come away with the six-point victory. The ‘Lopes were clutch at the line in the second half, making 20-of-22 attempts (90.9 percent), many of which came in the final minutes.
Hilo shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) in the second half, compared to just 32.0 percent (8-for-25) for GCU. The Vulcans outscored the ‘Lopes by one point in the final 20 minutes as they also drained five three pointers.
