The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team defeated Vanguard University 76-60 tonight at GCU Arena. The win was the sixth straight for the Antelopes, who improved to 7-2 overall. The Lions fell to 6-4 on the season.
GCU shot a season-high 57.8 percent from the field (26-for-45), led by
Joshua Lowery with 19 points.
Steve Morin added 14 points for GCU and
Blake Davis had 10.
The ‘Lopes outrebounded the Lions, 37-26, and scored 30 points in the paint. Both teams saw good contributions off the bench, as GCU had 22 while the Lions had 23 bench points.
The first half was a see-saw affair as there were six lead changes and three tied scores. Neither team led by more than three points for most of the first 20 minutes until the ‘Lopes broke open the game with a 13-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 38-27 advantage into the half.
Davis led the team with eight points at the half after going 2-for-3 from the field. GCU also held the advantage in rebounds, 19-12, including 15 of which that came on defense.
GCU shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the field in the first half, including draining four of their attempted eight three pointers. GCU committed nine turnovers in the half, leading to 11 Vanguard points, but were aided by 12 points off the bench.
The ‘Lopes opened the second half by scoring nine unanswered points to take a 47-27 lead with 18:27 remaining in the game. Including the first half run, GCU outscored the Lions 22-2 to break open a game that was tied at 25 with 6:03 remaining in the first.
The Lions did not score their first points of the second half until converting a layup with 16:29 to play. GCU led by as many as 22 points with 9:19 to play, as the closest Vanguard would make the contest was 13 points at the 2:20 mark.
GCU again shot over 50 percent in the second half (52.2 percent) while holding the Lions to an 11-for-28 mark from the field.
