The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team won their fifth straight game with a 78-67 victory over visiting Arizona Christian tonight at GCU Arena. With the win, the Antelopes are now 6-2 overall, while the Firestorm fell to 4-1 on the season.

GCU never trailed in the contest and built their largest lead of the game at 17 points, holding a double-digit lead for almost the entire game before Arizona Christian rallied to make it as close as six points.
The ‘Lopes matched their season-high with 78 points on 26-for-56 shooting from the field (46.4 percent). The Firestorm posted a 39.6 percent mark from the field (21-for-53).
The ‘Lopes were led by
Justin Foreman with 12 points, while four others also recorded double-digit scoring: 11 points for
Braylon Pickrel and
Killian Larson and 10 points for
Jerome Garrison and
Brad Carroll. Larson also pulled down a season-high 13 boards.
GCU scored a season-high 47 points in the first half, surpassing their previous high of 45 points, which they did against Northern State on Nov. 10 and CSU Dominguez Hills on Nov. 24.
GCU led by as many as 17 in the first half after shooting 19-for-33 from the field (57.6 percent). The ‘Lopes were led by Pickrel and Larson with nine points apiece, while Larson had a team-high 10 rebounds.
GCU held a significant advantage in rebounds, 25-11, and saw 18 of their points come from in the paint. The Firestorm went 8-for-11 from the free throw line, while GCU drained both of their attempts.
The Firestorm pulled within two points at 15-13 with just under 12 minutes on the clock in the first half before the ‘Lopes went on a 9-2 run to build a 24-15 advantage with 9:18 to play. The ‘Lopes held the scoring advantage for the remainder of the half, outscoring Arizona Christian 23-17 over the next nine minutes, aided by a 53.8 mark (7-for-13) from behind the arc, to take a 47-32 lead into the locker room.
The Firestorm opened the second half with a 10-5 run over the first five minutes to make it a 10-point game with 14:57 to play. The ‘Lopes fought off the Arizona Christian rally to retain a double-digit lead until the Firestorm made it a nine-point game at 67-58 with 3:50 to play.
Arizona Christian pulled within six points with two and a half minutes on the clock. Carroll drained three free throws to extend GCU’s lead to nine points and
Joshua Lowery made it a double-digit lead with two free throws of his own with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
A late three-pointer by Arizona Christian once again cut the lead to single-digits with 41.6 seconds to play. The see-saw affair ended when Foreman made two free throws to seal GCU’s victory.
GCU shot 30.4 percent (7-for-23) in the second half compared to a 47.8 mark (11-for-23) for Arizona Christian. GCU converted 22 second chance points and were aided by 35 points from the bench.
