The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team will host Western New Mexico tonight at 6:30 p.m. in GCU Arena. The game will mark the season opener for the ‘Lopes in the second season of Grand Canyon University Arena. The game can be viewed live by going to www.GCULopes.com. GAME NOTES
VS. WESTERN NEW MEXICO: GCU opens the second season of GCU Arena when the Mustangs visit tonight for a 6:30 p.m. tip. Tonight will be the season opener for Western, having dropped their lone exhibition contest on Nov. 5 at New Mexico State, 98-49. The two teams last met on Nov. 15, 2008 in Silver City, an 80-78 Mustangs win. The Antelopes led that game by 14 at the half.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon is coming off a 1-2 trip at the 2012 Disney Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Antelopes dropped the opener, 66-64, to No. 7 Winona State. GCU had the ball with a chance to tie or win at the buzzer. Canyon never trailed in defeating Northern State, 75-61, in their second contest. The ‘Lopes made 11-of-22 from the 3-point line. GCU fell 69-58 in their final game to SW Minnesota State. The Mustangs were among those receiving votes in the NABC Preseason Poll.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU went 15-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes averaged 2,278 fans per game last season, compared to 1,175 the previous year in Antelope Gym. The ‘Lopes were ninth in the nation in average attendance among all D-II schools. In an exhibition game on Nov. 5 vs. The Master’s College, GCU drew 3,175 fans.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon was 4-7 on the road last season, 3-7 the previous year. The Antelopes won three of their final four road tilts.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU averaged 72.3 points per game last season, third in the PacWest Conference. They shot .443 from the floor, sixth-best in the conference. Through three games this season, The Antelopes are shooting .413 from the floor and are averaging 65.7 points per game.
DIALING IN FROM DOWNTOWN: The Antelopes were third in the conference, shooting 36 percent last season from behind the arc. This season, GCU has made 21-of-48 from behind the arc for a 44 percent average. Steve Morin leads the way, having made 5-for-7 for a 71 percent clip.
