The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team fell this afternoon in their third and final game of the 2012 Disney Classic, 69-58, to SW Minnesota State at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The loss drops GCU’s overall record to 1-2, while SMSU improves to 2-1. SMSU was just outside of the NABC Preseason Top-25 poll, receiving 42 points.
The Antelopes and the Mustangs exchanged the lead six times over the opening 13:50, with GCU holding a 20-19 lead. From that point, GCU would miss their final eight shots of the half and watch SMSU go on an 11-2 run to claim a 30-22 lead into the break.
Killian Larson, who finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds, attempted to keep GCU in the game in the second half, dominating the inside by scoring 13 of the first 16 points. The Mustangs, however, were able to keep GCU at bay, extending their lead to 11 with 9:05 to play.
Brad Carroll scored eight points in a span of 2:25 to trim the deficit to four and bring the large contingent of ‘Lopes fans to their feet. It was as close as GCU would get in falling for the second time in three days.
The Antelopes struggled from the floor in the opening half, shooting 32 percent (8-for-32). They were able to pick it up in the second, hitting 13-of-25 for 52 percent.
“I don’t think we played very well today,” said head coach Russ Pennell. “We are in between offensively right now. We want to be a running team and we are not. We need to get back and get on the practice floor and figure that out. We are turning into a methodical team and that is not to our advantage. Offensively, this trip has been very disappointing.”
Grand Canyon made only 12-of-19 shots from the foul line, compared to SMSU, who sank 22-of-25 from the line. GCU held a 35-34 advantage on the boards, but committed four more turnovers (13-9).
No. 7 Winona State wrapped up the Classic with a 3-0 record, while SW Minnesota was 2-1. CSU Dominguez Hills, GCU, Northern State and UNC Pembroke all finished 1-2.
The Antelopes will now return home where they will open the second season of GCU Arena on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. against Western New Mexico.
