The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team moved up two spots to No. 15 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, as released today. The Antelopes continue to hold the third spot in the West Region behind Simon Fraser and Seattle Pacific.
GCU is 9-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference, currently behind Notre Dame de Namur (6-1-1).
“It is an honor to be ranked for the sixth straight week,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “It has been a fun year and the guys are playing their hearts out and playing for each other. When the program is ranked week in and week out, it speaks volumes about the season they are having. I believe that this is where our men’s soccer program belongs. We found that success through the 90s and I am glad to see that our program has arrived back in the rankings.”
The ‘Lopes are coming off two Pacific West Conference wins last week, as they defeated Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday and BYU-Hawaii on Saturday. GCU was led offensively by
Saeed Robinson,
Brandon Hansen and
Brian Green who each had two goals for the week.
The ‘Lopes conclude their homestand with games against Hawai’i Pacific tonight and Dominican (CA) on Saturday. Both games are slated for 5:45 p.m. kickoff. GCU will then hit the road for one game at Dixie State on Oct. 16.
“We still have a lot of soccer to be played, starting with tonight against a strong Hawai’i Pacific team,” added Draksin. “This is a big week for us to finish our homestand before we head on the road to Dixie. We are not going to take this ranking for granted and we are going to defend it. That means that we have to play our hearts out. Our goal is to stay in the top-25 nationally and top-three in the region. Ultimately, that takes commitment and sacrifice and our young men definitely have it in them.”
