The No. 11 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team won, 68-50, at Chaminade tonight in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The Antelopes improved to 15-2 overall and 7-2 in the Pacific West Conference play, while also moving to 7-0 on the road this season. The SilverSwords fell to 0-14 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
“Coming in here, we knew that they were not going to lay down for anybody despite not having had the success they wanted,” said head coach Trent May. “We wanted the girls to stick to the game plan and stay intense and focused. I would like to see us more disciplined in the details; that being said, we shot the ball well and did a great job on that end.”
The win was GCU’s 18
th consecutive victory in Hawai’i, dating back to the 2007-08 season. It was also the 12
th consecutive regular season PacWest road win and 14
th straight regular season road victory for the ‘Lopes.
“Tonight we did some things well, but we found things to work on as well,” May added. “We got a lot of good minutes out of all of our players tonight. Fortunately, we were able to rest some people.”
The ‘Lopes shot 50.0 percent from the field (26-for-52) and went 12-for-15 from the free throw line (80.0 percent). For just the second time this season, GCU was outrebounded, 28-24; however, the ‘Lopes have won both of those contests. The ‘Lopes forced 26 turnovers from Chaminade and so far on this road trip, have combined to force 59 turnovers by their opponents.
Maylinn Smith led the offensive charge with a game-high 18 points, while
Jallisa Butler added 14 points.
“We kind of got off to a slow start, with being in Hawai’i and the distractions here, so basketball needs to be our main focus,” said Smith. “They (Chaminade) are hard to defend because they play a stagnant offense which is not structured like we are used to.”
GCU opened the game on a 7-0 run over the first four minutes and did not allow a SilverSword basket until 15:11 remaining in the first half. The ‘Lopes took a 19-point lead at 28-9 at the 6:45 mark before Chaminade countered with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within eight points, 28-20. GCU then outscored the SilverSwords, 8-5, over the final three minutes to take a 36-25 lead into the half, the 16
th time this season they have led after the first period.
The ‘Lopes shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) in the first half, including a 7-for-8 mark from the free throw line. Smith had 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting at the half, while
Shelia Washington and
Angelina Dennison each had five points.
“We are working to continue to get better in the details,” May said. “Basketball is a mental game this time of year. We know that physically, we have the ability, so we need to stay mentally focused and prepared.”
GCU used a 12-4 run to open the second half and extend their lead to 48-29 with just over 14 minutes remaining and took their first 20-point lead at 52-32 with 11:31 remaining in the game. The ‘Lopes used a 13-0 run with just under 13 minutes to extend their lead to a game-high 29 points at 61-32. During that stretch, Butler collected six points, Smith chipped in with four points and
Jenna Pearson added two.
“Anytime you are trying to win a conference championship, every win is good,” said May. “I’m glad we are 2-0 with two to go over here and we know the next game will be just as important.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they continue their Hawaiian swing at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1. The Sea Warriors handed GCU just their second loss of the season on Jan. 24 in Phoenix. Tipoff for the rematch is slated for 8 p.m. Arizona time.
“We have to play well on both offense and defense and use our physicality,” Smith added. “We have to play hard for 40 minutes if we want to win.”
