The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team (10-5, 4-3) will play BYU-Hawai’i (9-7, 6-1) tonight in Laie, Hawai’i. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. (Arizona time). GAME NOTES
VS. BYU-HAWAI’I: GCU trails the all-time series, 11-6. The Antelopes and Seasiders are meeting for the first of their two meetings this season. BYU enters the game with a 9-7 overall mark, 6-1 in the league. The Antelopes and Seasiders split a pair of games last season, with GCU winning 69-64 on Jan. 29, 2011 in Phoenix and losing 98-77 on March 2, 2011 in Laie. The Seasiders advanced to the national championship game last season.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon defeated Hawai’i Pacific 70-57 on Jan. 24 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Nick Witherill led the ‘Lopes with 20 points. Barret Robbins matched his career high with eight rebounds. Kyle Speed finished with 18 points and Jerome Garrison had 14. GCU trailed at the half, 31-30, but led by as many as 16 in the second half.
LOOKING FOR A ROAD WIN: GCU is 10-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 2,087 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes, however, are 0-4 on the road this season, having dropped their last eight in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season. GCU is averaging 74.2 points per game at home, compared to 62.3 in the road.
FROOM THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.0 points per game this season, fourth in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 71 percent from the free throw line, third-best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 36.7 rebounds per game, third-best in the league.
THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE IS MAKING A CHANGE: Grand Canyon leads the PacWest with a 4.7 blocks per game average. The ‘Lopes have 70 blocks in their 15 games. Braylon Pickrel is leading the way with 31 blocks, tops in the league. Pickrel leads the team in rebounds, eighth in the conference, with 6.5 rebounds per game.
AS “W”ITHERILL GOES...: GCU’s Nick Witherill is averaging 12.5 points in Canyon’s 10 wins this season. In those games he is shooting 32-for-73 for a 44 percent average. Conversely, Witherill is averaging only 2.6 points per game in the Antelopes’ five losses. He has shot 4-for-27 (15%) in those games. Witherill has had three games this season in which he has scored 20 or more points.
BIG STRIDES FOR THE FROSH: Jerome Garrison continues to shine for the Antelopes, scoring in double-digits in seven of his last 11 games. He is averaging 11.6 points per game in his last five contests. Garrison is shooting 51 percent from the floor this season, having made 39-of-75 shots.
SENIOR LEADER: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 12 of his 14 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in six of those games. His 13.7 points-per-game ranks ninth in the PacWest. Despite missing a game earlier this season due to injury, Speed leads the team with 424 minutes played for a 30.3 per-game average.
PICKING UP THE PACE: Braylon Pickrel is pulling down 6.5 rebounds per game, eighth-best in the PacWest, and has a team-high 35 offensive boards. Pickrel leads the team and the league with 31 blocked shots, while his .583 field goal percentage is second in the PacWest. In his last six games, Pickrel is averaging 10.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Five different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: Following the game tonight the Antelopes will remain on the island of Oahu for games with Chaminade (Jan. 30) and Hawai’i Pacific (Feb. 1). The Antelopes dropped all four games last season when they made the trek to the islands. Following the games against Chaminade and HPU, GCU will travel to the Big Island for a game on Feb. 4 with Hawai’i Hilo.
