The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team (9-5, 3-3) returns to the court this evening where they will face Hawai’i Pacific at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The men enter the game with a 9-1 record at GCU Arena.
GAME NOTES
VS. HAWAI’I PACIFIC: GCU leads the all-time series, 11-5. The Antelopes and Vulcans are meeting for the first of their two meetings this season. HPU enters the game with a 7-8 overall mark, 2-5 in the league. The Antelopes and Sea Warriors split a pair of games last season, with GCU winning 74-57 on Feb. 17, 2011 in Phoenix and losing 74-70 on March 5, 2011 in Honolulu. The Sea Warriors have split the first two-games of this three-game road swing.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon defeated Hawai’i Hilo 77-64 on Jan. 19 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Braylon Pickrel led the Antelopes with 13 points and 10 boards, his second double-double of the season. Jerome Garrison led all GCU scorers with 16 points. The ‘Lopes outrebounded the Vulcans 53-36, for a plus 17 margin, their largest of the season.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is 9-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes have averaged 1,988 fans per game this season, compared to 1,175 a year ago. The ‘Lopes are 0-4 on the road this season, having dropped their last eight in a row, dating back to the 2010-11 season. GCU is averaging 74.6 points per game at home, compared to 62.3 in the road.
RUNNING THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.1 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 70 percent from the free throw line, fifth-best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 37.1 rebounds per game, third-best in the league. Justin Wesolowski leads the team on the glass, pulling down 6.7 rebounds per game, seventh in the league.
GET THAT STUFF OUT OF HERE: Grand Canyon leads the PacWest with a 4.6 blocks per game average. The ‘Lopes have 64 blocks in their 14 games. Braylon Pickrel is leading the way with 30 blocks, tops in the league.
HALFTIME INDICATOR?: GCU has won all nine games this season when leading at the half. They have lost all four games in which they have trailed at the half. They were tied at the break in their game at Dixie State, a game they would eventually lose. GCU is outscoring their opponents 500-430 in the first half, but only 495-490 in the second.
BIG STRIDES FOR THE FROSH: Jerome Garrison continues to shine for the Antelopes, scoring in double-digits in six of his last 10 games. He is averaging 11 points per game in his last four contests. Garrison is shooting 52 percent from the floor this season, having made 39-of-75 shots.
SENIOR LEADER: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 11 of his 13 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in six of those games. His 13.4 points-per-game ranks 10
th in the PacWest. Despite missing a game earlier this season due to injury, Speed leads the team with 395 minutes played for a 30.4 per-game average.
PICKING UP THE PACE: Braylon Pickrel is pulling down 6.4 rebounds per game, ninth-best in the PacWest, and has a team-high 34 offensive boards. Pickrel leads the team and the league with 30 blocked shots, while his .571 field goal percentage is second in the PacWest. In his last five games, Pickrel is averaging 11.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Five different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: Following the game tonight the Antelopes will play their next five contests on the road beginning with the always challenging four-game set in Hawai’i. The Antelopes dropped all four games last season when they made the trek to the islands. The first game will be on Jan. 28 when the ‘Lopes visit BYU-Hawai’i in Laie, HI.
