VS. DIXIE STATE: GCU (8-4, 2-2) trails the all-time series, 9-3. The Antelopes and Red Storm are meeting for the first of their two meetings this season. DSC enters the game with a 9-4 overall mark, 4-1 in the league. The Antelopes won here in St. George last season, winning 71-68 on Jan. 8, 2011. Dixie State holds a 24-3 home record over the past three seasons. The two schools will close out the regular season in Phoenix when they play at Grand Canyon University Arena on March 3.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon rebounded from a two-game skid, defeating Dominican 81-54 in Phoenix. The Antelopes used a 25-10 run in the first half and an 18-0 run in the second half to knock off the Penguins. GCU forced 18 turnovers and recorded 12 steals and 11 blocked shots. Kyle Speed led all scorers with 19 points. Justin Wesolowski added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Braylon Pickrel had five blocked shots.
STREAK BUSTER: GCU will look to snap their seven-game road losing streak, dating back to the 2010-11 campaign. GCU has lost all three of their road games this season.
RUNNING THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.8 points per game this season, third in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 71 percent from the free throw line, second-best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 36.4 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league.
GET THAT STUFF OUT OF HERE: Grand Canyon leads the PacWest with a 4.7 blocks per game average. The ‘Lopes have 56 blocks in their 12 games. Braylon Pickrel is leading the way with 25 blocks, tops in the league.
LONG-RANGE STRUGGLES: Grand Canyon is 17-for- 70 (24%) from the 3-point arc in its last four games. The ‘Lopes are shooting 31 percent (58-for-187) this season, seventh-best in the conference. Kyle Speed has made a team-best 17 three’s this season.
THIS AND THAT: GCU is first in the conference in turnover margin at a +1.25 per game. They are third in assist to turnover ratio at +0.9.
HALFTIME INDICATOR?: GCU has won all eight games this season when leading at the half. They have lost all four games in which they have trailed at the half. GCU is outscoring their opponents 427-360 in the first half, but only 435-423 in the second.
SENIOR LEADER: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in 10 of his 11 games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in six of those games. His 14.0 points-per-game ranks eighth in the PacWest. Despite missing a game earlier this season due to injury, Speed leads the team with 337 minutes played for a 30.6 per-game average.
ON THE BOARDS: Senior Justin Wesolowski has averaged 6.8 rebounds-per-game this season, seventh-best in the league. Braylon Pickrel is pulling down 5.9 rebounds per game, 15
th-best in the PacWest, and has a team-high 29 offensive boards.
STEPPING UP: Freshman Jerome Garrison has scored in double digits in five of his last eight games. He has averaged 11.1 points per game during that stretch. He scored a season-high 21 points on Dec. 30 vs. Arizona Christian and recorded a season-high seven rebounds on Jan. 5 at NDNU.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Five different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: The ‘Lopes will return home after tonight’s game where they will face Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 19. Hawai’i Pacific visits Grand Canyon University Arena on Jan. 24. Both games are slated for 6:30 p.m. tip times. Grand Canyon is 8-1 this season at GCU Arena where they are averaging 1,988 fans per game. Following the two-game home swing the Antelopes will play their next five contests on the road beginning with the always challenging four-game set in Hawai’i.
