The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team fell behind 2-0 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first half, but battled back and actually outplayed the Toros in the second half before losing 2-1 today at Toro Stadium in Carson, Calif.
The Antelopes fell to 0-3 on the season while Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 6 in the West Region in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, improved to 2-0.
The Toros, who reached the NCAA Division II title game in 2009 but failed to qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA tournaments last year despite returning all 11 starters,
got on the scoreboard first in today's contest. Senior midfielder Taylor Canatsey got a ball inside the box from senior All-America forward Jessica Murphy and one-timed it past GCU sophomore goalkeeper Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ, Salpointe Catholic) into the top shelf.
The score became 2-0 three minutes later when a ball deflected off of a 'Lopes defender inside the box for an own goal.
GCU made it 2-1 in the 39th minute when senior defender Kelli Woodard (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley HS, University of San Francisco) converted a penalty kick.
Statistically, the match was even. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 13-12 advantage in shots in the game, but the 'Lopes held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks.
Fourteen fouls were called, nine of them on the Toros, and three yellow cards were issued, all on Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Lena recorded three saves in her first start of the season for GCU.
The 'Lopes play the newly renamed Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State) of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. The Mavericks are 0-2 this season.
GCU then will play another RMAC school, Fort Lewis, at 2 p.m. on Monday in Grand Junction. The Skyhawks are 2-0.
