The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team scored two second-half goals and went on to defeat Colorado Mesa University, 2-0, in front of a crowd of 334 tonight at Walker Field in Grand Junction, Colo.
It was the first win of the season for the Antelopes, who are predicted to come in second place in the Pacific West Conference this season after finishing as the runner-up last year. They lost all three games on a trip to California last week. The Mavericks, members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, also are 1-3 this year.
"The team showed great character in the second half and fought well for the victory," GCU Head Coach Stevie Gill said.
Sophomore midfielder
Jessica Scarpati (Las Vegas, NV, Shadow Ridge) got GCU on the scoreboard in the 54th minute when she headed a corner kick by junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun) into the right side of the net. It was Scarpati's first goal of the season.
Freshman midfielder
Jessica Lincoln (Phoenix, AZ, Thunderbird) made the score 2-0 in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal, the first goal of her college career.
The 'Lopes were outshot, 18-14, in the game. Eleven of Colorado Mesa's shots came in the second half.
The Mavericks also had an 11-8 edge in shots on goal.
There were nine corner kicks in the game, five of which were taken by Colorado Mesa. Seventeen fouls were called, 12 of them on GCU.
Two yellow cards were issued, one to each team.
The 'Lopes take on another RMAC team, No. 6-ranked Fort Lewis (3-0-0), at 2 p.m. on Monday in Grand Junction. The Skyhawks rallied for two second-half goals to beat Dixie State 3-1 today in Grand Junction.
