The Grand Canyon University wrestling team today announced the signing of David Makara for the 2011-12 season.
Makara attended Burrell High School in Burrell, Penn., a suburb of Pittsburgh.
“David is an extremely talented athlete coming from a powerhouse wrestling program in a powerhouse wrestling state,” said head coach R.C. LaHaye. “On pure wrestling ability, David has the potential to be the best in Division II very soon. We are excited he chose GCU over several Division I schools and we are looking forward to having him compete for the ‘Lopes.”
Makara, who will look to wrestle at 125 or 133 pounds, brings with him an impressive wrestling resume. He has won the WPIAL State Championship on three occasions and is also a three-time Pennsylvania State placer.
Makara has made his mark on the national stage as well, winning the NHSCA National Championship as a sophomore. He also is a four-time placer at the Ironman Tournament, which is rated as the best high school tournament in the country.
Makara joins Steven Knoblauch, Chayse Jackson, Kyle McCrite, Andy Rico and Brett Sanchez, who earlier signed with GCU.
LaHaye is expected to announce additional signings in the near future.
