Grand Canyon University second baseman
Claire Zampini (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) has been named Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year, and she and two other GCU softball players -- senior outfielder
Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College) and senior third baseman/first baseman/designated player
Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College) -- have been named to the 2011 All-PacWest First Team.
The honors were announced live on "PacWest Magazine, The Radio Show" this afternoon.
Zampini led the Antelopes in batting average (.414, sixth in the PacWest), runs (46, first in the PacWest), doubles (12) and triples (3); was second in hits (70, second in the PacWest), total bases (91, fourth in the PacWest) and stolen bases (6); and third in RBI (22), putouts (104) and assists (81). She started all 47 games and had one home run, 104 putouts, 81 assists and a .949 fielding percentage.
"Claire was a huge contributor on both sides of the ball," GCU Head Coach Ann Pierson said. "Her tireless work ethic along with her tremendous athletic abilities led to her successes on the field. She was a consistent performer who always competed day in and day out, and that approach led to her individual accolades.
"Claire is a student of the game and has a very bright collegiate future. We are very proud of Claire for her honors. They are well-deserved."
Barry, the 2010 PacWest Player of the Year and 2011 PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, led GCU in home runs (8, tied for fifth in the PacWest), total bases (93, third in the PacWest), slugging percentage (.633, fifth in the PacWest), on-base percentage (.471, eighth in the PacWest) and stolen bases (22, first in the PacWest); was second in batting average (.388), runs (39, ninth in the PacWest), hits (57, tied for fifth in the PacWest) and RBI (41, tied for sixth in the PacWest); and tied for second in doubles (10, tied for eighth in the PacWest) and triples (1). She, too, started all 47 games and had 52 putouts, two assists and a .947 fielding percentage.
"Teddy is one of the best athletes to have worn a GCU uniform," Pierson said. "She had two tremendous years and was a constant threat on defense, at the plate and on the bases. She is a natural athlete who can dominate a game with her abilities. We will miss Teddy as a person and as a student-athlete. We are very proud of Teddy for her accomplishments."
Lucas who made the All-PacWest First Team as a utility player, led the team in RBI (43, tied for fourth in
the PacWest); was second on the team in home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.549); was tied for second in doubles (10, eighth in the PacWest); and was third in runs (27), hits (47) and total bases (78). She started 41 of 41 games played and had a .342 on-base percentage, 84 putouts, 53 assists and a .932 fielding percentage.
"Montana is a great example of perseverance," Pierson said. "She hits every challenge head on and expects success. She is a bright young woman with the world in the palm of her hands. Her outstanding athletic abilities and high expectations of herself led to great successes on and off the field.
"She was a player we could count on to get something started or come through in the clutch. We relied heavily on her experience and game sense to lead and compete. We are very proud of Montana and know that she will succeed in anything she does. We wish her the best!"
The 'Lopes finished the season with a record of 22-25 overall, 14-14 in the PacWest.
