Murphy was acknowledged for her National Player of the Year honor at Wednesday’s Phoenix Suns-Oklahoma City Thunder game – including a spot on the Fox Sports Arizona broadcast -- and has had two workouts with the Phoenix Mercury this week.
Pursuing an opportunity to play professionally in the U.S. or overseas, she was given a chance to work out with Mercury stars Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor, and some players from the Arizona State University program.
“I’m really optimistic. I felt I held my own,” said Murphy, who along with another player played two-on-two against Taurasi and Taylor. "It was fun and I learned a lot."
Murphy finished her career at GCU as its all-time leading scorer (2,147). This past season, she led the nation in scoring (24.6 points per game) and free-throw shooting (91.4 percent). She was named the Division II national player of the year by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and the publication Women’s Division II Bulletin.
“I need to get in really good shape and that’s something that’s totally in my control,” said Murphy. “All I can do is work out and try to get better.
“I feel pretty confident that somebody is going to want me.”
