The Grand Canyon University softball team split the first two games of the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno today in Turlock, Calif., losing 5-4 to Cal State San Bernardino at Warrior Field at Cal State Stanislaus and winning 9-5 over Cal State Monterey Bay at Pedretti Park.
The Antelopes now are 13-14 overall, 5-7 in the Pacific West Conference.
GCU is in Pool D in the 22-team tournament along with fellow PacWest members Dominican and Hawai'i Pacific, Western Oregon of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Montana State Billings of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Pool D plays Pool C, which includes five teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Conference: Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State, UC San Diego and tournament host Cal State Stanislaus.
In the first game, freshman shortstop
Stephanie Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O'Connor) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, and sophomore outfielder
Samantha Wyatt (Glendale, AZ/Independence) was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
The 'Lopes had seven hits in the game. They scored one run in the first and third innings, and two in the sixth.
Freshman
Dani Jackman (Mill Creek, WA/Henry M. Jackson) pitched 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and five runs, all of which were earned. She walked six and recorded three strikeouts. She took the loss, and is 2-4 on the season.
In the second game, Smith went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, senior outfielder
Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, freshman designated player
Rachel Meyer (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored, and junior third baseman
Vanessa Chavez (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic, Arizona Central College) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored.
GCU had nine hits in the game; CSUMB had seven.
Freshman
Danielle Legee (Lebanon, OR/Lebanon) started and pitched five innings. She gave up seven hits and five runs, three of them earned. She walked three and had seven strikeouts, and got the win. She is 2-1 on the season.
Junior
Brittany Manzoline (Peoria, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College, Glendale Community College), normally an outfielder, pitched the final two innings and didn't allow any hits or runs.
Today was the third time this season that GCU has played Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters defeated the 'Lopes 5-0 on Feb. 4, and GCU beat CSUMB 10-0 two days later. Both games were in the GCU Invitational at Quail Run Sports Complex in Mesa.
The 'Lopes will play three games tomorrow, against Chico State (16-7 overall, 11-5 CCAA), UC San Diego (22-6, 14-5) and Cal State Stanislaus (16-22, 11-17).
