The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team has signed Gabriella Y. Zavala de Rojas, a forward from the San Diego High School of International Studies, to a National Letter of Intent.
Zavala de Rojas, who turned 18 on March 12 and has four sisters, will be a freshman at GCU this fall. She plans to major in psychology.
In addition to the San Diego High School of International Studies, Zavala de Rojas played for the
United Futbol Club in 2010-11. She was named Varsity Forward of the Year and captain for
San Diego High School, the oldest of 31 high schools in the San Diego Unified School District located at the edge of downtown San Diego. In 2004, San Diego High School was divided into six thematic schools as a result of funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. One of those schools is the
School of International Studies.
In 2008-09, Zavala de Rojas was named Varsity Forward of the Year and Athlete of the Month for December by San Diego High School Athletics. She also received the Rising Star Award and was named Athlete of the Week by
The San Diego Union-Tribune.
In 2007-08, she was named Varsity Most Valuable Player of the Year by San Diego High School Athletics and second-team all-league by the
San Diego Hall of Champions, which promotes, recognizes and preserves athletic achievement for the purpose of inspiring individuals of all ages to reach their full potential.
