Brian Broderick became the 14th Grand Canyon University baseball player to ascend to the Major League level after making the Opening Day roster for the Washington Nationals.
Broderick, who played for GCU in 2007, was 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA (4 ER in 14.2 IP) in 10 relief appearances this spring with the Nationals. He held opposing hitters to a .232 batting average.
Broderick made 14 starts for GCU in 2007, going 6-5 with a 3.65 ERA (36 ER in 88.2 IP). He helped lead the team to a 31-21 record, a 10-win improvement from the 2006 season.
Broderick played for Phoenix Washington High School and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as their 21st-round selection (652nd overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
The Nationals selected Broderick from the Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft prior to the start of this season.
Broderick and the Nationals open the 2011 Major League Baseball on March 31 when they will host the Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
