The Grand Canyon University baseball team completed a five-game series sweep of Hawai’i Hilo today, winning 6-1, at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.
The win was GCU’s fifth straight and improved their overall record to 16-15. Their Pacific West Conference record remains at 11-9, as today was a non-conference game.
The Antelopes have now won 10-of-13 games since Ryan Bethel took over as the club’s interim head coach.
Courtland picked up his second complete game of the season, both coming against the Vulcans. Courtland allowed one run on eight hits with three strikeouts over 9.0 innings. In the process he saw his ERA drop from 6.88 to 4.85.
Ortiz had three hits today, including a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning that gave the ‘Lopes a 5-0 lead. It was Ortiz’s first home run of the season and fourth by a GCU player.
Joe Jacobson gave Grand Canyon a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the second.
Grand Canyon returns to action on April 1 and 2, where they face Dixie State in a pair of doubleheaders. First pitch at Brazell Stadium on the April 1 is 1:00 p.m. Dixie State is currently in first place in the PacWest with a 13-3 record, four full games ahead of the Antelopes.
Game Notes: PJ Garcia had his seven-game hitting streak snapped today…Antelope pitchers have six complete games this season, compared to four total in 2010…today was GCU’s ninth errorless ballgame of the season…Bair hit .550 (11-for-20) in the five-game series, with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
