Grand Canyon junior designated hitter
Trevor Schmidt was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday after a dominant offensive weekend in the Lopes' series win over Air Force.
Schmidt becomes GCU's first-ever MW Player of the Week in the program's inaugural season in the conference. He is also the third Lopes player to earn a weekly MW honor, joining freshman
Tanner Johns (Freshman of the Week) and right-hander
Chase Frey (Pitcher of the Week).
Schmidt powered the Lopes offense with an ultra-productive series. He hit .500 (6 for 12) with a 1.667 OPS (.500 on-base percentage / 1.167 slugging percentage), leading GCU in hits, RBIs and total bases.
He totaled 10 RBIs, two home runs, two doubles and 14 total bases across the three-game series, recording at least one hit and one RBI in every game.
Schmidt set the tone in the series opener, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs.
"I knew he was going to throw a slow offspeed," Schmidt said of his home run at bat. "I was kind of just waiting for something up in the zone. That's what I saw and took advantage of it."
His production came during a stretch where GCU's offense has surged, with the Lopes continuing to find consistency in MW play.
"The season has its ups and downs and I think we have found our groove at the right time," Schmidt said. "When we get firing on both cylinders like we did tonight, we're a really tough team to beat. We understand each other's roles and we have each other's backs," Schmidt said. "If I don't get the job done, the next guy will. It's really helping us produce runs and push together."
A versatile presence in the lineup, Schmidt has contributed across multiple roles this season while delivering consistent run production in the heart of the order.
"I'm just doing whatever I can to help the team win," Schmidt said. "I started the season on the bench, so I've learned how to stay ready and contribute when my number is called."
