The Grand Canyon University baseball team slugged their way to a sweep over Hawai’i Hilo this afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.
The Antelopes won the opener, 12-6, behind 19 hits. They took game two, 14-3, knocking out 14 hits.
GCU improves to 13-15 overall and 9-9 in the Pacific West Conference. Hawai’i Hilo falls to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference. The ‘Lopes have rebounded to win the last four meetings between the clubs after dropping the first three.
Joey Bristyan led the Grand Canyon offensive charge in the first game, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
Kalab Evans went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI.
GCU never trailed in the game, holding leads of 5-1 after five innings and 8-4 over seven innings.
The Vulcans cut the lead to 8-6 after the top half of the eighth, but the Antelopes put the game away with four runs on three hits and four walks in the bottom of the inning.
Brady Wager (3-4) recorded the game one win, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.
Grand Canyon wasted little time in establishing momentum in game two, scoring seven runs in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Colin Courtland and
Jackie Samora opened the inning with back-to-back doubles and were followed by an RBI single by Bristyan. Samora would later hit a sacrifice fly to right to cap his two at-bat two-RBI inning.
Tyler Bair was the offensive star in game two, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three-run home run. It was the first home run by Antelope at home this season.
Cody Repenning (3-1) picked up his second complete game of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over 7.0 innings.
The two teams will square off in another doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m., at Brazell Stadium.
