The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped two games today to Hawai’i Pacific, 6-4 and 7-5, at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.
The losses drop GCU to 11-15 overall and 7-9 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU improved to 9-13, 7-5 in the conference.
The Antelopes fell behind 5-1 in the opener, before mounting a rally in the sixth. GCU would score three runs on the benefit of five walks in the inning. After cutting the HPU lead to 5-4, Sea Warriors reliever, Corey Yuh, was able to strike out
R.J. Etchebarren and induce
Tyler Bair into a fly out to right to escape the bases loaded jam.
Grand Canyon would once again rally in the eighth as
Joey Bristyan and
Ernesto Ortiz collected back-to-back one-out singles. HPU reliever Yuh was once again able to work out of the difficulty, getting Etchebarren and
Tyler Kamtz to fly out.
David Wydeven (1-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits over 6.0 innings.
The Antelopes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on three hits and three Sea Warrior errors.
Hawai’i Pacific would later tag on a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to gain a 7-5 lead.
As was the case in game one, the Antelopes had chances to get back into the game, but left two runners aboard in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cody Repenning tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and finished the day with 4.1 scoreless frames.
Grand Canyon remains at home for a five-game series with conference foe Hawai’i Hilo, beginning on March 25 at 1:00 p.m.
