The Grand Canyon University wrestling team is in fifth place overall after day one of the NCAA Division II National Championships in Kearney, Neb.
A school record five wrestlers achieved All-American status this evening, four of which are still competing in the championship bracket.
“I’m very proud of what our guys were able to do tonight,” said head coach R.C. LaHaye. “Tomorrow will be another tough day and we are looking forward to getting back at it.”
No. 1 ranked Todd Wilcox advanced to the 133-pound semi-finals tonight, winning 3-1 and 6-0. He improved to 34-3 overall and has won his last 19-straight matches. Wilcox will meet No. 5 Jason Jeremiason of Augustana in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
No.2 Victor Carazo has now won 22-straight matches, winning 4-1 and 3-2. A scheduling quirk will have Carazo facing off against Ryan Pankoke of Nebraska-Omaha in tomorrow’s semis. Pankoke is ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds.
No. 5 Eli Arizmendez earned his place in the semi-finals with 3-1 and 4-3 decisions. Up next for Arizmendez, who improved to 22-2, is No. 8 ranked Mitch Knapp of West Liberty. No.1 ranked and undefeated Donovan McMahill of Western State sits in the other semi-final.
Ted Bristol turned heads today, winning by fall (3:53) and 5-2. Next up for him is No. 3 ranked Dillon Bera of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Ryan Becerra used wrestlebacks to earn his second straight All-American honor. Becerra split his first two matches of the day and used a 5-3 win over Tanner Keck of Central Oklahoma to advance to day two of the championships. He is still eligible to finish as high as third.
Kyle Wilson lost both of his matches at 141 pounds and finishes his season with an 18-12 overall record.
As a team, the Antelopes four remaining wrestlers in the championship bracket are tied for the second-best among all schools. GCU is just 2.5 points out of fourth place.
