The Grand Canyon University wrestling program heads to Kearney, Neb. for the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 11 and 12.
The Antelopes enter the NCAA’s ranked No. 9 in the country. They finished third at the RMAC/NCAA Region IV Championships that were held in San Francisco, Calif.
“Our guys are ready to battle on the national stage,” said head coach R.C. LaHaye. “We are confident in their abilities and now its showtime!"
Todd Wilcox enters the championships ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds. He brings with him a 32-3 record and a 17-match winning streak, including a 4-0 mark enroute to the RMAC Championship. Wilcox has a school record 70 wins in his career.
Victor Carazo moved up to No. 2 at 174 pounds in the latest poll, his highest-ever ranking. Carazo has won a school record 20-straight matches. His 68 career wins are second in school history. Carazo finished fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships.
Ryan Becerra jumped back up to No. 6 at 184 pounds. The returning All American is 26-11 this season and placed second at the RMAC Championships. Becerra is tied with Carazo with 68 career wins.
Eli Arizmendez entered the rankings for the first time this season at No. 5 at 197 pounds. He finished second at the RMAC Championships and is 20-2 since joining the Antelopes in January.
Ted Bristol’s third place finish and Kyle Wilson’s fourth place finish at the RMAC Championships will give them their first taste of the national stage. Both wrestlers fought off opening day losses to rally for a spot in Kearney. Bristol and Wilson enter the competition with records of 18-10.
