In its final year at Antelope Gymnasium, Grand Canyon University’s women’s basketball program will have a first.
Saturday’s 3 p.m. tip-off will pit, for the first time, two nationally-ranked teams.
"It's the next game in the process of meeting our goal," said GCU coach Trent May. "They're the third team (of the eight-game homestand) coming in and in the way of what we want to do. They're a very good team, but it's our next opponent, so it's our biggest contest."
GCU, receiving national recognition for the first time this season, is No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Antelopes play host to No. 10 Dixie State in a crucial Pacific West Conference game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
GCU is 17-2 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. Dixie State is 16-1 and 6-0. GCU lost at Dixie State in January.
Statistically, the two teams are ranked in the Top 25 nationally in 24 different categories. Leading the way for Grand Canyon is All-America and Division II Player of the Year candidate
Samantha Murphy, who leads the country in scoring with a 25.2 scoring average.
GCU is also looking for a school-record 10th straight homecourt victory.
Next season, GCU will play at its new campus site, Grand Canyon University Arena, scheduled to be ready prior to the 2011-12 season.
