Grand Canyon looks to avenge a Senior Day/Homecoming loss to Hawaii-Hilo Saturday at Hilo’s UHH Gymnasium Saturday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. MT (7:30 p.m. in Hawai’i).
While revenge is nice, the game means much, much more to the Antelopes, in the thick of the race for a Pacific West Conference championship.
GCU led as much as 14 points in the second half before falling 69-66 to the Vulcans Feb. 19 at Antelope Gymnasium.
“We felt like we should have won the first time, but give full credit to (Hilo), they did what they needed to do,” said GCU head coach Russ Pennell. “This game is bigger than just beating Hilo. We realize we still have an opportunity to win the Pacific West Conference. This game is bigger than a revenge game.”
Grand Canyon is 14-8 overall and 9-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The Antelopes are one-game behind in the loss column, trailing BYU-Hawai’i, Chaminade and Dixie State. BYU-Hawai’i and Chaminade are both 11-2. Dixie State is 10-2. Saturday’s game at Hilo is the first of four regular-season ending games in Hawai’i. The ‘Lopes will play both BYU-Hawai’i and Chaminade during the trip.
A lot could happen in the PacWest standings in the course of the final regular-season week. All four teams in the running are in Hawai’i. Dixie State, like GCU, will play Hilo, BYUH, Chaminade and Hawai’i Pacific. BYUH and Chaminade play each other one week from Saturday.
